One more trip of the year … to the Charleston area. I saw a window of good weather for the weekend before a front came through and we decided to make it three days…
First a visit to the beach at Isle of Palms County Park. I can imagine this place is very busy in the high season. They appear to have all the right facilities for a family day at the beach … restrooms, changing areas, playground … all the Charleston County Parks are well done.

No trip to the beach is complete without local seafood. Stop at Mt Pleasant Seafood for fresh shrimp, fish, grits…
One night we had fish tacos and the next my first attempt at Shrimp & Grits. The family at it all up so I must have done something right…
Our campsite at Mt Pleasant KOA. We usually try to get a spot at James Island County Park and Campground but they were full. I can say that we were just as happy at this KOA. It’s actually on the property of Oakland Plantation – owned by the family of the Plantation. Very well run and friendly staff.

Tent sites that are not an afterthought – prime lakefront are these sites. Although we are certainly not tenters, it’s nice to see a well done campground that caters to everyone, no matter how you camp.
There is even a good sized dog park with fencing that extends into the water … so your water loving dog can enjoy it without gator issues…
Later in the day my daughter and I rode the Lake Trail from the campground. Another nice amenity of the park – in many ways this spot reminded us of James Island.
Some of the trail is on a graded “causeway” similar to the West Ashley Greenway

A few more “challenging” spots with roots to negotiate. But certainly a family friendly trail.
The last afternoon we took the tractor ride for a tour of the Plantation. This is something not to miss if you stay here. Our guide did well explaining the history of the Plantation and how the family came to startup the KOA.
