I’ve been looking forward to this trip for awhile…
Proverbs 5:18 King James Version (KJV)
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
A little early this year to schedule sitters for the kids, we started out on a trip to the beach together for 4 days.
On our way out of town, we stopped by a “local” favorite, Old School Mill’s Fresh House restaurant. We had seen this restaurant on North Carolina Weekend on UNCTV and having been here before made a point to stop in again.
After sandwiches we had to have a little dessert!
As one would expect … old school general store fare is for sale as well.
From walking the grounds to the style of our room, this hotel reminded us of our trip last year to Couples San Souci in Jamaica. No joke. It’s as if the owners were attempting to model a resort stateside on a tropical destination. In fact, from reading the resort’s history, one can imagine this was the intent all along.
Our room, a King Jasmine oceanfront, was cozy (a general euphemism for small but well executed and not cramped). We had a wet bar, a good sized “dorm” fridge small sitting area and even some plates, glasses, and utensils. (We were even surprised how housekeeping washed up our dishes every day!)
Of course one of the best parts – the deck and rocking chairs just outside the door, with a great view of the dunes and the ocean.
Before dinner we walked around to check out the grounds. There is definitely a tropical feel with the landscaping, boardwalks, signs, pool bar (Thirsty Tiki), sitting areas and so on…

This same area is shaded by day and lit from the trees at night. Nice touch!

That evening, we decided on Sharky’s for dinner. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect since the UrbanSpoon reviews were mixed. However, we had excellent service!
We started with (huge) shrimp for an appetizer, along with fried clams – and a sandwich and a wrap for dinner. Just enough.
While waiting on dinner, we had something occur which I never had before – the owner (or someone acting as the owner, we’ll never know I guess) approached us and asked if we could move one table over, in exchange for 15% off of our bill. In fact he had a large party waiting and needed to combine tables to get them seated quickly. Why not? He even honored the free appetizer coupon we had received from The Winds for staying with them. What a deal!
Another nice thing about Sharky’s is the classic beach feel – it is right on the intracoastal and at night there’s opportunity to sit outside and see all the boats docked nearby.
A fun first day at the beach!
